Nov. 7, (1944) Tuesday Dear Everybody: I just got back from Wichita. Crew 7, 10, and 3 went to the big Boeing plant to watch how they construct the B-29s. We noticed a lot of improvements in its construction and they really look nice as they roll off the line, brand new and ready to go. I received my money for being grounded in Wichita. Antyime a crew is forced down in some other city where sleeping accomodations are not available and they must furnish their own, each man gets 7 dollars a day. We were there for almost 2 days and got 12.50. Do you remember I called you up just after I landed in Pratt from Wichita that night. I'm trying to listen to election returns and write this letter at the same time. That louse Rosevelt seems to be getting the best of the deal again. The last report I've heard was that Roosevelt is carrying 18 states and Dewey 14. At least my good old state of Wisconsin is doing okay. Last report gave Dewey 5000 to 2000 for Rosy so I can at least brag up the old place. I've got a slight hunch that if he does win, which he may well do, he won't live out his full term. That boy really looks tough. I saw him in a newsreal a couple of weeks ago. He looks pretty rough. Say, I think I'll retire for the night and finish this in the morning. We should have a good idea of who will rule for the next 4 years then. Good morning! Rather, good afternoon. I just heard another report on the election. Rosy, approximately 18,000,000 and Dewey 16,000,000. Looks bad. This state of Kansas had twice as many votes for Dewey than for Rosy though. They aren't so dumb at that. I'm going to forget about the...election. It bores me. I found out something about our Captain Marchesi that I never new before. He was Clark Gable's personal pilot during his training in the States. Clark took him to Hollywood for two weeks and the Captain said he never had so much fun in all his life. I guess he met every movie star in Hollywood. He told us that he had a date with Ann Southern and said, "Is she ever cute!" He said that Clark Gable was an "okay" guy. The best fellow he met out in Hollywood was Fred McMurray. He said that if we ever get to Hollywood (Crew 7), we'll be all set soooo!?!?! The weather here is slowly turning toward winter. There's quite a wind blowing today and I imagine it's quite rough flying. We've got three of those "Warm Morning" stoves in our barracks & one in the latrine though so we shouldn't be cold. Better look that Stoker over good, pop, and get the car ready! Time to close, Sonny Boy, Don
