November 3, 1944

Friday, Nov. 3, 1944 Dear Everybody: …We took a trip to Galvaston, Texas last night. Wow, was it cold. Old man winter really has begun to make itself known in Kansas. When we took off, it was nice and warm on the ground but when we landed again at 12:25 this morning, it was plenty cold… I got the Banner today and really got a shock when I saw that Bob Heger was killed. I see that Howard Thedinga is also missing in action. You probably don't know him but I knew him pretty well. He was in my typing class and we used to have a lot of fun together. It kinda brings the war a bit closer to home when something like that happens… Just had another little argument with the crew. I guess I'll never get to be the command gunner in this crew. Every time I tell them that I'm their gun commander we have a little session which usually ends up with me on the bottom and 4 gunners on top of me, twisting my arms and pulling my hair and six other things, trying to make me say I'm not the gun commander. Then, we all go to the bombadier who is our first Lt. and I complain to him that the boys aren't showing me any respect. He reprimands them and tells them to obey me. Well, as soon as he's gone we go at it again and I end up threatening to tell Rippy again and they threaten to break my arms again. It's all in fun in case you didn't know it including the bombadier Rippy, who loves to reprimand them and makes it sound as though I was King Bigshot himself. I'll guess I'll close for now. Gooooo Bye. Sonny Boy, Don
