Salute To Aging Veterans

More than 60 years ago, the 40th Bombardment Group flew missions to bomb iron works, airfields and rail and navy yards in Burma, China and Japan. But the young fliers' primary mission was more basic: Do their duty for their country, then return home safely.

Efforts to raise money for a new bronze sculpture and new museum for the B-29 All Veterans Memorial complex are in motion again and donations are needed. The Memorial is located at the Pratt Industrial Airport.

Nor will he.
The closest their lives touched was on Sept. 23, 1943, when Shriver's B-26 lost an engine during a training run as it was preparing to land at the Pratt Air Force Base.

Heroism Never Dies

For the Daily News — Retired U.S. Air Force Major Rodney B. Dyerly never gave up his dream of honoring the pilot that saved his town and school on Sept., 23, 1943.

When Greensburg’s Lt. Jack Shriver helped spare the town of Pratt, Kansas, including the school attended by Dyerly, the major never forgot that dramatic fall day.
